More About Nauru...

Nauru (formerly Pleasant Island) is an island nation and microstate in Oceania in the Central Pacific Ocean.  Its nearest neighbors are Banaba Island in Kiribati, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Federated States of Microneasia, and the Marshall Islands.  Nauru is the third-smallest country in the world behind Vatican City and Monaco.  It is the smallest republic and smallest island nation.

The first postage stamps of Nauru were of the German Marshall Islands Protectorate (the island was then part of this territory).  The first post office on the island opened in 1905 and used these stamps.  During World War I, Nauru was occupied by Australian forces and used Australian stamps overprinted "North West Pacific Islands" from 1914 to 1916.  The British took over the island after that with British stamps overprinted "NAURU."  From 1924 on, stamps were issued for Nauru as a mandated territory, then a trust territory after World War II.  After Nauru obtained independence, it began issuing its own postage stamps in 1968.
