More About Niger...
Niger is a country in West Africa named after the Niger River. It is bordered by Libya to the northeast, Chad to the east, Nigeria to the south, Benin and Burkina Faso to the southwest, Mali to the west, and Algeria to the northwest. Over 80% of its area is within the Sahara Desert, meaning most of its population lives in the far south and west of the country. Niger was a French colony until it gained independence in 1960.
The first postage stamps of Niger were stamps of Upper Senegal overprinted with "TERRITOIRE DU NIGER" in 1921. These stamps were surcharged the following year. From 1926 onward, new stamps were marked "NIGER" with "AFRIQUE OCCIDENTALE FRANCAISE" in smaller letters. Niger used the stamps of French West Africa from 1944 to 1959 before issuing the first stamps of its own. The nation officially gained independence the following year. Interestingly, there have been some stamps indicated to be from Niger but that are actually illegal issues. It's always interesting when controversy enters the stamp world!
