More About Mauritania...

Mauritania (the Islamic Republic of Mauritania) is a sovereign state located in Northwest Africa.  It's bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to teh north and northwest, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest.  It is the 11th largest country in Africa and has 90% of its land located within the Sahara Desert.  The country was part of French West Africa until 1960, when it gained independence.

The first postage stamps of Mauritania were issued in 1906 (stamps of Senegal were used before this).  The first designs were the same as other French West Africa territories and were designated by the territory name along with "Afrique Occidentale Francaise."  A series of definitive stamps were issued beginning in 1913 and were in use for 25 years.  Neew stamps came in 1938, but were discontinued in 1944 when West African territories no longer issued their own stamps and simply used the stamps of French West Africa.  When Mauritania gained independence in 1960, the country began issuing its own stamps.  Stamp denominations were in French African CFA francs until 1973 when this was replaced with the ouguiya (UM).
