Guinea is a country on the coast of West Africa and was formerly known as French Guinea.  It is bordered by Guinea-Bissau to the northwest, Senegal to the north, Mali to the northeast, Ivory Coast to the east, Sierra Leone to the wouthwest, and Liberia to the south.  It's southwest coast borders the Atlantic Ocean.  Its capital and largest city is Conakry.

Before 1892, French Guinea used French Colonies postage stamps.  When it was separated into its own colony, it produced its own postage stamps (the first in 1892).  In 1942, French Guinea stamps were replaced by the stamps of French West Africa.  The first stamps of the Republic of Guinea waere issued on January 5, 1959, after the country officially obtained independence.  You'll enjoy discovering all the neat stamps in this collection.
