More About Croatia...

Croatia is a country on the border of Central and Southeast Europe on the coast of the Adriatic Sea.  It is bordered by Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro to the southeast, and shares a maritime border with Italy to the west and southwest.  Its capital and largest city is Zagreb.

Before 1918, Croatia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and used their stamps from 1850 to 1871 when the Croatian-Hungarian Settlement was signed and Kingdom of Hungary stamps were used.  In 1918, Croatia overprinted existing Hungarian stamps with "Hrvatska SHS," before printing their own stamps in 1919.  These stamps were used until 1921 when the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (Kingdom of Yugoslavia) issued stamps for all encompassing areas of the kingdom.

Croatia gained independence in 1941 and overprinted Yugoslav stamps with "Hezavisna Drzava Hrvatska."  When the government fell in 1945, Croatia stamps were overptined with a star and "Jugoslavia" or "Demokratska Federativna," before being replaced with stamps of Yugoslavia.  Croatia finally gained independence again in 1991 and issued its first stamps on September 9, 1991.  You'll enjoy discovering all the neat stamps in this collection.  Click here to read more about Croatia's postal history.
