Why the stamp was issued:  These four stamp designs were issued to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023.

About the stamp design:  The stamp designs were created from wood engravings by British artist Andrew Davidson.  There are four different designs.  The following is how they are described by Britain’s Royal Mail:

  • The Coronation (First Class Mail Rate): representing the monarchy, continuity, longevity, heritage, and tradition
  • Diversity and Community (First Class Mail Rate): reflecting a multi-faith community, cohesion, and the people of modern Britain
  • The Commonwealth (£2.20 Mail Rate): depicting an outward-looking Britain, global trade, cooperation, democracy, and peace
  • Sustainability and Biodiversity (£2.20 Mail Rate): highlighting the importance of conservation, biodiversity, and a society that works with nature

Special design details:  These stamps were printed with lithography, giving them a classic look that reminds us of Great Britain’s status as the first country to issue adhesive postage stamps.

History the stamp represents:  Upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II (Britain’s longest reigning monarch) on September 8, 2022,  Prince Charles officially became king of the United Kingdom.  At 73 years old, he was the oldest person to ascend to the British throne to date (after having been the longest-serving heir apparent and Prince of Wales in British history).  His coronation was held at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023, and he officially became King Charles III, with his wife, Camilla, becoming Queen Consort at the same time.
