Elvis had become a regional singing sensation in the early 1950s, but he exploded onto the national scene in 1956. Two songs that helped make him a superstar were “Hound Dog” and “Don’t Be Cruel.” They were recorded during one session and released on the same single in July 1956. Before the year ended, each song had spent time as the number one song on the pop, country and R&B charts.

“Hound Dog” held the top spot on the pop charts for 11 weeks, a record that stood for 36 years. Elvis performed “Don’t Be Cruel” during all three of his performances on The Ed Sullivan Show.  “All Shook Up” was released the following year and quickly climbed the charts, as well. It spent eight weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 list. Proving Elvis was more than a national star, this song was also number one on the U.K. charts for seven weeks. At the end of 1957, Billboard named “All Shook Up” the song of the year.
