This is your chance to get a desirable 24-karat gold-plated Kennedy Half-Dollar with small imperfections that save you money.

The Kennedy Half-Dollar was issued just months after the tragic assasinatino of the 35th President of the United States.  Now over 60 years old, these coins are still important additions to your coin collection.

Shortly after JFK's death, Eva Adams (director of the US Mint) contacted the Mint's Chief Engraver, Gilroy Roberts, about plans to honor Kennedy on a US coin.  On November 27, 1963, Jacqueline Kennedy said she preferred the Half-Dollar because she did not feel her husband should replace George Washington on the quarter and there was a stock pile of dollar coins in the US Treasury.  Plans for a Kennedy Half-Dollar proceeded at full speed.

The coin design was finished before long and was reviewed by jacqueline, who recommended only a few small changes.  The dies were ready for production, but there was one hurdle that stood in their way – the law.  It took an act of Congress to make new coins.  According to precedent, coin designs could only be changed after 25 years unless specially approved by Congress.  (The Benjamin Franklin Half-Dollar had only bee in circulation for 15 years at the time.). However, with the backing of President Lyndon B. Johnson, Congress passed a bill on December 30, 1963, allowing the new coins to be issued.

The first Kennedy Half-Dollars were struck on January 30, 1964.  The coins went on sale March 24th and quickly sold out.  Few of these coins went into circulation.  Instead, they were kept by collectors and Americans who wanted a memento of the popular President Kennedy.  The Kennedy Half-Dollar is still minted today.  It's not often seen in circulation, but is still popular with collectors.
