Uncirculated Great Britain Penny Created After Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation
New Great Britain pennies were created after Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne following her father’s death. With a large number of pennies already in circulation, the first of these pennies created were originally sold in specimen sets for collectors. But since the sets were sold for only slightly more than face value, many were later broken open and spent.
Years later, new pennies were created marking the final non-decimalized Great Britain pennies. Like the previous coins, these new pennies used the same QEII bust design created by sculptor Mary Gillick. However, there was a slight change to the inscription, with the new one reading DEI GRATIA REGINA, which is Latin for “By the Grace of God, Queen.”
