The first stamps of Latvia are scarce and come complete with a neat story – yet they’re surprisingly affordable!

Repeatedly invaded by Germany during World War I, Latvia declared independence when the war ended in 1918. Faced with a severe paper shortage, the new government printed its first stamps on the one plentiful source – the back of military maps left behind by the vanquished German army.
