• The 1939 Baseball Centennial Stamp commemorates the 100th anniversary of the beginning of baseball. While other forms of the game had been played for years before the 1839 date, Abner Doubleday is credited with formalizing the rules of baseball – most of which remain today.
• The 1969 Professional Baseball Stamp honors the centennial of America’s first salaried baseball team. In 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first salaried team, making them baseball’s first professional baseball team. The highest salary was $1,400 for the season, which is equivalent to over $145,000 in modern wages.
• Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball. During his 10-year career, Robinson won the first Rookie of the Year Award, was a six-time All-Star, and was the honored as Most Valuable Player in 1949.
• Babe Ruth is considered one of the greatest American sports heroes of all time. In a career that spanned 22 seasons, he established many MLB records, including two that still stand today.
• Roberto Clemente was a four-time batting champion, 12-time All-Star, 1966 MVP, and Gold Glover winner 12 years in a row. While he was admired by millions on the field, he was also a humanitarian, and died on his way to a relief mission in Nicaragua.
• Nicknamed the “Iron Horse,” Lou Gehrig played an amazing 2,130 consecutive games, a record five years longer than that of his nearest rival. He was a seven-time All-Star, two-time MVP, and was the first MLB player to have his uniform number retired.
• Olympic Baseball – Although baseball was played as a demonstration sport in seven former Olympic Games, the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona were the first where the game was played as an official sport.
