 More About South Africa...

The Republic of South Africa is the southernmost country on the African continent.  It is bordered by Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe to the north and Mozambique and Eswatini to the east and northeast.  It surrounds the enclaved country of Lesotho.  Its capital cities are Pretoria, Bloemfontein, and Cape Town.

Before South Africa became a united country in 1910, each part issued its own stamps.  The first stamp of the Union of South Africa was issued November 4, 1910, and pictured King George V.  Most South Africa stamps issued from 1926-1951 were in pairs, with one reading "SOUTH AFRICA" and the other "SUIDAFRIKA" or "SUID-AFRIKA."  The first Reupblic of South Africa stamps were issued on May 31, 1961, and labeled "REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA REPUBLIEK VAN SUID-AFRIKA" until 1966.  From 1967 onward, they were inscribed "RSA," though modern stamps simply read "South Africa."
