This neat strip of two mint stamps was issued by Canada in 2019 to mark the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing. The stamps honor the role several Canadians played in the mission’s success.
Canadian engineers James Chamberlain and Owen Maynard played an important role in the creation of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. Chamberlain recommended the best type of spacecraft to bring the mission to the Moon and back, solved some issues with the lunar module, and helped ensure the astronaut’s spacesuits and life-support systems were working properly. Maynard provided some early sketches for the lunar module and checked that several systems in the lunar module and service module worked together the right way.
A number of other Canadian scientists, engineers, and computer experts also worked on the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions that preceded the Moon landing, contributing to the technology that made it possible. Additionally, the lunar module’s landing gear was made in a Quebec factory and remains on the moon today.
