Souvenir Sheet Tribute to the
Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep
and the Engraver’s Art

Issued in 2018 by Canada Post, this mint souvenir sheet of four stamps honors the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis).  The stamp’s fine engraving captures every detail of this proud creature in its lush mountain habitat.

Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep live in the mountain ranges from British Columbia and Alberta south to Colorado and New Mexico.  Their split hooves have rough bottoms with a natural grip that enables them to climb the high, steep, rocky ground.  Having suffered from overhunting and loss of habitat, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep are a species of special concern in British Columbia.

To bring this scene to life, Canada Post used a combination of lithography and intaglio.  Canadian Bank Note master engraver Jorge Peral engraved the stamp, while his son, Rodrigo, provided the illustration.  The selvage around the stamps includes photographs of Peral and his at work, showing the different steps involved in the intaglio engraving process.

This is a neat issue packed with detail.  You’ll want to add it to your collection today.
