The Royal Air Force was founded on April 1, 1918, in the final months of World War I. It was created through the merger of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service, making it the first air force independent of army or navy control. Upon its founding, it was the largest air force in the world, and today, it’s the oldest independent air force in the world.
To mark this historic anniversary, Great Britain issued this set of six mint stamps to honor “its proud military history and technological innovations, [and] its brave personnel.” The stamps picture historic RAF aircraft used over the last century.
