Mint Stamp Tribute to the
Discovery of Halley’s Comet

This mint sheet was issued in 2008 to mark the 250th anniversary of the discovery of Halley’s Comet.

Halley’s comet returns to the inner planets of the solar system every 75 to 76 years.  Its appearance was first recorded in 240 BC.  English astronomer Edmond Halley determined in 1705 that the sightings through the years were the same comet.  He predicted that it would reappear in 1758, however, he died before his prediction came true.

You an own a mint sheet honoring this milestone anniversary.  It features neat artwork including portraits of Halley, a plaque in Westminster Abbey honoring him, the Halley Research Station in Antarctica, and a 1985 coin commemorating the comet’s return.  A fun way to add this history to your collection.
