# M12117 - 1999 Dolley Madison Silver Dollar, Proof
Own the First U.S. Coin to Honor a First Lady –
Dolley Madison Sesquicentennial Silver Proof Dollar
This US Silver Dollar Proof coin was minted in 1999 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of First Lady Dolley Madison. This was the first time that a US First Lady was honored on an American coin (though a series honoring America’s First Ladies was introduced in 2007). This coin was also the first to be designed by Tiffany & Co. and features their hallmark logo on both sides. Produced especially for collectors, proof coins are struck twice to enhance the design and shine like a mirror.
The front of the coin bears a portrait of Dolley surrounded by her favorite flowers, Cape Jasmines, with Montpelier’s icehouse beside her. Interestingly, the portrait of Dolley used on the coin was painted by Gilbert Stuart (the same artist who painted the George Washington portrait she saved from the British during the War of 1812). The back of the coin pictures her Montpelier home with willow trees and foliage. A portion of the proceeds from this coin went to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, to aid in the care and maintenance of Montpelier, her and husband James Madison’s home. This coin is an important piece of US and coin history – you’ll want to add it to your collection.
Minted: 1999
Diameter: 1.5”
Composition: 90% silver, 10% copper

Dolley Madison, America’s Third First Lady
As the wife of President James Madison, Dolley had a close association with the nation's capital and knew 12 Presidents. When the White House was burned in 1814, she salvaged a Gilbert Stuart painting of George Washington, valuable state papers, and other national treasures before escaping to Virginia. She is also credited with redefining the role of First Lady. Click here to learn more about her life.
