# M12011 - 1992 Olympic Clad Half Dollar & Silver Dollar, Proof
Are You Missing These 1992 Olympic Proof Coins?
Only 1 Set Available!
These striking coins were minted in 1992 for that year’s summer games in Barcelona, Spain and winter games in Albertville, France. Set includes a clad half dollar and 90% silver dollar. Surcharges from the sale of these coins went to the US Olympic Committee, to support athlete training.
The half dollar coin pictures a gymnast in front of the American flag on the front. The back pictures an Olympic torch and olive branch. It also includes the Olympic motto “Citius Altius Fortius,” Latin for “Faster, Higher, Stronger.”
The 90% silver dollar coin pictures a baseball player throwing a ball on the front. The back depicts the Union Shield with olive branches and the Olympic rings. There was a bit of controversy surrounding this coin. The pitcher on the front strongly resembles a photo of Nolan Ryan that appeared on a baseball card. The coin’s designer denied this and stated he drew inspiration from several sources, including Ryan.
What’s a proof coin? Proofs are the finest coins produced by the US Mint. The proof blanks are specially treated and hand-polished and cleaned so the images are struck perfectly. They’re also struck at least twice, which results in a frosted and highly-detailed design and mirror-like background. You’ll want to see these coins in-person to appreciate all the fine details. They’ll make great additions to your coin or Olympics collection – order now.
