In 1985 and 1986, the US Mint produced a set of coins commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty.  Formally named Liberty Enlightening the World, the statue was a gift from France in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.  A late start and several delays prevented the statue from being completed in 1876 in time for the centennial, but it was finally completed in 1884 and officially dedicated by President Grover Cleveland on October 28, 1886.

With this special offer, you’ll get the 1986 Statue of Liberty Silver Dollar and Clad Half Dollar Proof Coins.  Approved by Congress, the coins included a surcharge that was used to help restore and renovate the statue and Ellis Island.

The 90% silver (and 10% copper) dollar coin pictures the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, labeled “Gateway to America.”  The back pictures Liberty’s torch and includes a line from Emma Lazarus’s poem, “The New Colossus:” “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”  Lazarus had written the poem to help raise money for the statue’s pedestal, and it was so moving, it was later cast onto a bronze plaque inside the pedestal.

The copper-nickel half dollar coin pictures the statue and an immigrant ship entering New York Harbor.  The back pictures an immigrant family arriving in America and is inscribed “A nation of immigrants.”

Both coins are proofs, which are the finest coins produced by the US Mint.  The proof blanks are specially treated and hand-polished and cleaned so the images are struck perfectly.  They’re also struck at least twice, which results in a frosted and highly-detailed design and mirror-like background.  You’ll want to see them in-person to appreciate all the fine details.  Send for yours now.
