Mint Stamps Feature Diana's Most Prized Tiara

This beautiful mint sheet features pictures of Diana wearing two of her favorite tiaras, including the Cambridge Lover's Knot.  This tiara has an interesting history of its own.

Back in 1914, Queen Mary, who enjoyed creating new jewelry had the Cambridge Lover’s Knot made.  It had a design similar to the tiara given to Queen Mary’s grandmother, Princess Augusta of Hesse, for her 1818 marriage to the first Duke of Cambridge.

The Cambridge Lover’s Knot originally had a series of pearl spikes, but Queen Mary had them removed in the 1930s, and it has remained unchanged since.  Queen Mary passed her tiara on to Queen Elizabeth II who wore it as a young woman.  In 1981, she passed it on to Princess Diana for her wedding.  Many believe that because of its strong association with Diana, it won’t be worn again.

The other tiara she is pictured wearing is the Spencer tiara, a family heirloom believed to have been created in the 1830s.  The striking tiara features scrolling foliage and star-shaped flowers with gold and silver diamonds.
