Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on November 20, 1942, Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr., moved with his family to Delaware when he was ten years old.
After earning degrees in history and political science from the University of Delaware, Biden attended Syracuse University College of Law. While at Syracuse, he married Neilia Hunter, and the couple had three children, Joseph II (Beau), Robert, and Naomi.
Biden returned to Delaware after graduation and was elected to the New Castle County Council. At the age of 30, he became a U.S. Senator. Tragedy struck his family before he could begin his new position. His wife and daughter were killed, and his two sons were seriously injured in a car accident. Torn between caring for his family and duty to his country, Biden returned to Delaware each day from Washington, D.C., to be near his recovering sons.
Reelected five times, Biden became Delaware’s longest-serving Senator. In 1977, he married Jill Jacobs, and the couple added a daughter, Ashley, to the family. During his thirty-five years in the Senate, Biden earned a reputation as an expert in foreign affairs. Serving as a longtime member and Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, he was one of the first to anticipate the end of the Cold War. Biden influenced American policy during the war in Bosnia, urging the use of military force to combat human rights violations.
