Marilyn's Glamorous Beauty
Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jean Mortenson, near Los Angeles, California, on June 1, 1926. She spent most of her childhood in orphanages and foster homes. When Norma Jean was sixteen, an Army publicist photographed her working in the Radioplane Munitions Factory, marking the beginning of her modeling career. He hoped her image would serve as an inspiration to the troops. By 1946, Norma Jean had appeared on a number of magazine covers and was offered a one-year contract by 20th Century Fox, paying $125 a week. It was at this time she changed her name to Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn’s first film, in which she had a small part, was The Shocking Miss Pilgrim in 1947. Marilyn continued to work steadily, but did not become a star until 1953s Niagaraskyrocketed her career. This was followed by lead roles inGentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire. At the age of 27, Marilyn was voted the Best New Actress of 1953 by “Photoplay” magazine. By 1955, Marilyn grew tired of her kooky blonde image and was ready to begin a serious acting career. She moved to New York to study with Lee Strasberg. In 1956, she started her own motion picture company, which producedBus Stop and The Prince and the Showgirl. In 1959, Marilyn was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy for her performance in Some Like It Hot. In 1962, she received a Golden Globe for Female World Film Favorite. Marilyn completed thirty movies, leavingSomething’s Got to Give unfinished, due to her shocking death on August 5, 1962. Though she was orphaned at a young age and lived in poverty for most of her early life, Marilyn overcame her personal troubles and became a star. Long after her death, she is still respected and revered as one of America’s great Hollywood legends.
