Experienced collectors use ultraviolet (UV) light to detect details invisible to the naked eye.  Many U.S. stamps have features that help automate mail – “taggant” of phosphorescent or fluorescent material that’s “read” by an optical sensor.  Phosphorescent tagging can be seen under shortwave UV, while fluorescent tagging glows under longwave UV.  Shortwave UV light can also be used to detect different kinds of paper and repairs such as reperforations and filled-in places.  This “dual-wave” lamp produces both forms.
