These Stamps Tell Germany’s Story
Contents may vary – each reflects Germany’s long and interesting history. Once a group of over 350 tiny states ruled by monarchs, Germany was unified in the 19th century. The oldest stamp in the set I looked over was an 1889-90 10-pfennig red, issued just years after that historic event.
A 1900 stamp in the collection I explored pictures Germania, which is the personification (symbol) of old Germany. Another was issued by the Province of Saxony during World War II, while it was under Russian occupation. I also saw a few produced in 1946 during the Allied occupation of Germany. These stamps brought World War II history to life in a unique way.
More modern stamps commemorated prominent Germans, including Gustav Heinemann, president of the Federal Republic of Germany, and philosophers Friedrich Engels and G.W. Friedrich Hegel. Some were people I was only vaguely familiar with – so it was fun to Google their names and discover how they helped change the course of history!
