# HO1-6 - 1896 Hawaii Officials, Complete Set of 6 stamps
Own a Complete Mint Set of Hawaii Officials Stamps
Fresh from the Sheet – Never Hinged, Fine Centering
Never Available at Any Post Office
Hawaii Official stamps were printed in 1896 by the American Bank Note Company. This was just three years after the company produced the beloved US Columbian stamps. Hawaii Official stamps are prime examples of American Bank Note's expert craftsmanship. However, they were only intended for government use. This means they were never available at any post office. They were also printed in much lower quantities – just 10,000 of each denomination.
In Use for Less Than Two Years!
Hawaii Official stamps were discontinued on August 12, 1898. Collectors had few chances to get their hands on the stamps in that short 18 months and for some time after. In fact, all remaining quantities were sold to a single speculator. With that in mind, it's no surprise many collectors today haven't heard of Hawaii Official stamps.
That's not the only part of the story...
Discover the Hidden Political Agenda of These Little-known Stamps
At the time Hawaii Official stamps were issued, politicians – especially Lorrin Andrews Thurston – had been pushing US annexation of Hawaii for several years. However, then-president Grover Cleveland was against it, no matter how much Thurston petitioned him.
Despite the lack of interest in annexation, there was quite a bit of communication between the US and Hawaii. This led to Hawaii's Foreign Affairs Department requesting stamps for use on outgoing government mail. The new Official stamps were designed by Major G.C. Potter, chief clerk of the Office of Foreign Affairs. Potter seemed to share the desire for Hawaii's annexation and he chose Thurston as the subject of all six stamps.
Since much of Hawaii's government mail went to the US, Thurston's face haunted Grover Cleveland for the rest of his presidency. However, this wasn't the only way annexation was promoted on the sly... When US troops came through Hawaii during the Spanish American War, soldiers were given free Official stamps to send letters home. This put Hawaii in the minds of countless everyday Americans as well.
