On the day a stamp is issued, a small number are put aside to go on sale at one officially designated post office. Only a tiny fraction of those stamps are placed on high-quality, specially designed envelopes (covers). The design on the envelope is called a cachet and complements the stamp subject. Then the First Day of Issue cancellation is applied showing the date and city of the designated post office. First Day Covers truly are “limited editions.”
Covers will vary, but they’ll all be produced by Fleetwood, a famous name in the First Day Cover world with a reputation for quality. Most will have interesting historical information on the back related to the stamp subject and the cachets are full-color works of original art. Fleetwood covers have been produced since 1941 and are loved by collectors.
One of the covers I saw commemorates the Battles of Lexington and Concord. The stamp was one of over 100 issued to celebrate the bicentennial of the American Revolution. Another honors journalists John Hersey and George Polk. Hersey is known for his harrowing tales from the front lines of World War II. Polk risked his personal safety to report on the Greek Civil War in 1948. Both were heroes.
