Own a Scarce 1893 Hawaii Double Overprint
From the Honolulu Advertiser Collection
In 1893, rebels overthrew Hawaii’s ruling monarchy and formed a provisional government. Kingdom of Hawaii stamps, featuring portraits of the former ruling monarchs, were overprinted with “Provisional Govt. 1893.”
During this process, some of the overprints were placed in the wrong spot, or were too weakly inked. Rather than continue on to the next sheet, the printer instead fed the stamp sheet through the press a second time, to get a better overprint. As a result, some stamps had a double overprint. These overprints were classified into three categories – a double overprint where both strikes are heavy, a double overprint where one strike is moderate, and a double overprint where one strike is weak. The stamp offered here has a moderate strike. It’s a neat piece Hawaii postal history.
The Honolulu Advertiser Collection
The Honolulu Advertiser Collection was a 1,878-piece collection of Hawaii’s entire postal history, and was considered the greatest collection of a single country’s stamps ever assembled. Honolulu Advertiser publisher Thurston Twigg-Smith created the collection. His grandfather Lorrin A. Thurston had supported Hawaii’s annexation to the US and had also served as a publisher of the Advertiser. In another interesting connection, the newspaper’s founder, Henry M. Whitney, had been Hawaii’s first postmaster and oversaw the production of the kingdom’s first stamps, the Missionaries, in 1851.
Twigg-Smith spent decades building the collection, to help preserve Hawaii’s postal history. When he was done, it was the largest and most complete collection of Hawaii stamps in the world. In 1995, he auctioned off the entire collection, making it possible for other collectors to own these pieces of Hawaii’s postal history.
This H60e stamp is from a block of 10 offered at that auction. So you not only get a scarce double overprint stamp, but you can also own a piece of the famed Honolulu Advertiser collection. Plus with your order you’ll get an H60 stamp with the normal overprint FREE, so you can compare it to your scarce double overprint.
