Over 80 years ago, the Internal Revenue Service transferred all remaining stock of scarce Wine Revenue stamps in its vaults to those of the National Postal Museum in Washington, DC. Fortunately for us collectors, a limited quantity was preserved for many years. Now you can get often-overlooked Wine Revenue stamps for under $10.
In 1941, the US issued Wine Revenue stamps to help fund World War II. (And to help rebuild Europe after the war.) The stamps showed pre-payment of taxes on wine. Affixed to bottles, cases, and even tankers of wine, most were destroyed. So Wine Revenue stamps – some with seldom-seen fractional values – are scarce in any condition.
