Paraguay

The first stamps of Paraguay were three 1870 imperforate issues described in Scott Catalogue as “Vigilant Lion Supporting Liberty Cap”. The second set came eight years later with the same design surcharged with large black or blue numerals. The lion in different poses accompanied by the Liberty Cap is a recurring theme in Paraguay’s stamps through 1909 and from time to time in later years. The Liberty Cap is a symbol of the republic, as it is for other nations, such as France. The lion is associated with strength and courage. In 1940 Paraguay issued a stamp for the 100th anniversary of the postage stamp. The country’s first stamp was reproduced on it.
