Grenada

Grenada, one of the “Windward” Islands, issued its first stamp as a British Colony in 1861. The portrait of Queen Victoria showed her facing forward, instead of in profile. In 1974, Grenada became an independent state of the British Commonwealth. A set of its earlier stamps was overprinted with “Independence” and the date, marking the event. Grenada issues many stamps – one especially interesting series showcases the first stamp of each U.N. member. Official stamps of Grenada are overprinted “PRG”, which stands for “People’s Revolutionary Government.” This refers to the political faction in power 1979-83. Grenada also issues stamps for its Grenadines – smaller islands it governs.
