Ceylon

Ceylon issued its first postage stamp in 1857. Known today as Sri Lanka (“Resplendent Island”), the nation has been an independent republic in the British Commonwealth since 1972. Like those of most British colonies, the early stamps of Ceylon bore the portrait of Queen Victoria from first issue until her death in 1901. Many of Ceylon’s stamps showcase the beautiful engraving stamp collectors treasure. Several issues are common design types, meaning they’re the same as other colonies’ stamps honoring the same event, such as a monarch’s jubilee, wedding, or visit.
