Outer Mongolia’s first stamps were issued in 1924 on surface-tinted paper. At the center of each value is the scepter (or Vajra) of Indra – a Buddhist religious symbol. Buddhism is the main religion of Mongolia. The next several issues though 1931 had symbols referred to as Soyambo. They include fire, the sun, moon, triangles, yin and yang symbols, and rectangles, each with a special meaning to the country. These symbols appear of Mongolia’s national flag. In addition to the name of Mongolia in western script on its stamps, you’ll also find Russian Cyrillic letters. Despite the waning of Russian influence in Mongolia, the use of the Cyrillic script continues.
