In April 1871, Japan issued its first postage stamps: a set of four stamps of different postal rates. These stamps all featured the same intricate design, with the denomination printed in a second color (black) at the center. Early Japanese stamps use the Japanese language. Starting in 1966, stamps say Nippon, meeting Universal Postal Union regulations.
