Uganda

Stamps of Uganda have seen many changes over the years, just as it has. The first stamps were produced on a typewriter by a British missionary in 1895. The letter “U” appeared at upper left, “G” at upper right, with denomination in the center, all in black ink. When Reverend Ernest Millar got a new typewriter, the color changed to violet. Little did the reverend know he was creating stamp rarities for future collectors – “Uganda Cowries”. Later stamps reflect the political status of the country: 1896 – Uganda and Uganda Protectorate; 1903 – East Africa and Uganda Protectorate; 1922 – Kenya and Uganda; 1935 – Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika; 1962 – Uganda, overlapping with KUT; and that’s not all.
