1920 $1 Nereus in Pedro Miguel Locks Overprint

In 1919, postal authorities at the Canal Zone ordered $1 (or 1 Balboa in Panama’s currency) stamp from Panama to be overprinted. Panama didn’t have a stamp with that denomination, so they were ordered from the American Banknote Company. They were delivered in August 1920 and available to customers the next month.

The stamp was printed in two colors. The frame is dark violet and the central design is black. It pictures the USS Nereus in the eastern portion of the Pedro Miguel Locks. The design is based on a photograph taken in 1915.
