California Gold Rush Centennial
 
These four stamps were issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the California Gold Rush. They were produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and placed on sale June 1, 1949. 
 
Before the canal was built, treasure seekers from the East Coast traveled over the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean. 
 
CZ142 – Forty-niners arriving at Chagres. The 3¢ stamp covered the rate for a letter traveling by boat to the U.S.
 
143 – Journeying in a small native boat called a Bungo to the town of Las Cruces. This stamp paid for the airmail rate for a letter or for double-weight letters going to the U.S. by boat.
 
144 – The Las Cruces Trail to Panama, the most difficult part of the trip. Paid for double-weight airmail letters to the U.S.
 
145 – Leaving Panama City for San Francisco in the SS Panama. Used to pay the 15¢ registration fee and 3¢ ship mail rate.
