CZ115-19 – 1933-39 Issues

Like many early Canal Zone issues, most of these five mint stamps were created by overprinting existing stamps:

CZ115 – 1932 3¢ deep violet Washington, U.S. #720.

CZ116 – 1931 14¢ dark blue American Indian stamp, U.S. #695.

CZ117 – Not an overprint, this stamp was issued to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal. It pictures George Washington Goethals, who was appointed by President Roosevelt to be Chairman and Chief Engineer of the isthmian Canal Commission. He served in that position until completion of Canal construction in 1914. Goethals than served as Governor of the Panama Canal until his resignation January 17, 1917.

CZ118 – 1938 1/2¢ orange Franklin, U.S. #803.

CZ119 – 1938 1-1/2¢ brown Martha Washington, U.S. #805.
