A Northerner joins forces with the CSA to produce high-quality stamps and currency

Unlike the North, the Confederate states of America lacked the means to produce finely engraved stamps. Inferior stamps were printed by stone lithography and typography until engraver John Archer was successfully recruited from the American Bank Note Company by the CSA. Archer engraved the first of four 10c blue stamps bearing the profile of Jefferson Davis. The profile on the stamp bears a strong resemblance to Abraham Lincoln. As the story goes, Davis’ wife was not pleased the stamp because of that, and wanted the stamp withdrawn. In fact, another 10c blue stamp was produced shortly after, with a more life-like portrait of the Confederate president. This was possibly because the original copper plate had worn out. It was also a boon to postal workers who no longer had to read “TEN” spelled out, rather than quickly identifying the numeral “10”.
