In early February 1981, Diana received a call from Prince Charles, who was away on a ski vacation. He told her that when he returned he wanted to speak with her. Diana anxiously spent the next five days awaiting his return.

On February 6, in the nursery of Windsor Castle, Charles told Diana that he had missed her while he was away, and he asked her to marry him. Overwhelmed, Diana couldn’t control herself and began to giggle. Charles explained to her how important his question was, because if she accepted, she would some day be queen. Once she could control her laughter she accepted and repeatedly told him she loved him.

Knowing what a life-changing event the engagement was, Charles didn’t buy a ring for Diana when he first proposed. He wanted her to consider what it meant to be Princess of Wales. She was expected to produce an heir – and as a princess, she would have little privacy. After she accepted all these responsibilities, Charles gave Diana her choice of engagement rings. An exquisite selection of rings from Garrard Jewelers was placed before her. She selected an oval blue sapphire surrounded by 14 small diamonds.

Diana moved into Buckingham Palace on February 23 to begin her training as a member of the royal family. She was taught the proper way to behave in court and the responsibilities of being a princess. On February 24, the engagement was officially announced. Diana, already growing used to the spotlight, was now put under tighter scrutiny. She could feel the critical glare of the public eye and the pressure to be a perfect addition to the royal family. Through it all, she remained positive while she planned the fairy tale wedding of the 20th century.
