Charro!
Charro! was Elvis’ only movie in which he didn’t sing. He does sing the title song “Charro,” written by Billy Strange and Mac Davis, during the credits, however. This was also the only film in which Elvis had a beard. Filmed at the Apacheland Movie Ranch in Apache Junction, Arizona, this western was written and directed by Charles Warren. Noted for his long career in westerns, Warren often directed and produced the movies he wrote. Some of his well-known work includes Streets of Laredo, Oh! Susanna, and Springfield Rifle as well as the TV series “Gunsmoke” and “Rawhide.”
In Charro! Presley plays a former member of a gang of outlaws. He is kidnapped by the gang and framed for the theft of a gold-plated cannon. Elvis’ character rescues the town that owned the cannon from his former gang and returns the cannon.
To promote the film, Texas Governor Preston Smith hosted a “Charro! Day” in Austin where the finalists from 25 Charro Girl contests appeared. And in Oklahoma and Louisiana “Charro! Days” were declared by the governors to honor the movie’s previews in those states.
