Harum Scarum
Harum Scarum was the second Elvis film released in 1965. The film was shot on the Culver City studio lot with sets reused from the Cecil B. DeMille classic film King of Kings. Many of the costumes were reused from the 1944 movie Kismet and its 1955 remake. The movie reunited Elvis with Gene Nelson, who had directed 1964’s Kissin’ Cousins, and Mary Ann Mobley, Elvis’ co-star in Girl Happy.
The film was billed as “a riotous rockin’ rollin’ adventure spoof. Elvis plays Johnny Tyrone, who travels to the Middle East to premiere a new movie. He gets involved in a plot to kill the king of the fictional town of Bar Esalaam. Johnny falls in love with the king’s daughter, who is disguised as a slave girl. The assassination plot is foiled, the king gets his kingdom back, and Johnny marries the king’s daughter. After Harum Scarum was released, it climbed to #11 on the Variety national weekly box office chart.
