It Happened at the World’s Fair
It Happened at the World’s Fair was Elvis’ 12th film. Elvis played Mike Edwards, a crop-dusting pilot down on his luck. In the film, Edwards goes to the Seattle World’s Fair to look for work and falls in love with nurse Diane Warren (played by actress Joan O’Brien).
The movie was actually filmed on location at the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. Elvis was at the peak of his popularity and mobbed everywhere he went. In addition to his own bodyguards, a team of up to 60 Seattle police officers were assigned to protect Elvis. It’s reported that girls posed as high school newspaper reporters seeking an interview with the star, climbed up his hotel fire escape, and even managed to slip past guards to steal Elvis’ scarf.
Actor Kurt Russell made his film debut in It Happened at the World’s Fair. Russell portrays a young boy who Edwards paid 25¢ to kick him in the shins (so that he would have a real injury for nurse Diane to attend to). Elvis reportedly struck up a friendship with Kurt’s father, Bing Russell.
Ironically, Kurt Russell portrayed the King of Rock and Roll in the 1979 made-for-television film Elvis Presley. Russell was 27 at the time – the same age Elvis had been during the filming of It Happened at the World’s Fair. Bing Russell portrayed Vernon Presley, Elvis’ father. Kurt Russell fell in love with his co-star Season Hubley – who played Priscilla Presley – during the production and married her!
The soundtrack to the film featured titles written by some of Elvis’ most successful songwriters, including Otis Blackwell and Winfield Scott; Fred Wise, Ben Weisman, and Dolores Fuller; and Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett.
