Blue Hawaii
Elvis began filming Blue Hawaii in March 1961, after signing a five-year contract with Paramount to do one picture a year. The producer, Hal B. Wallis, made a cameo appearance in the film and can be spotted walking down the street.
The film also starred Angela Lansbury, who years later starred in the television show Murder, She Wrote. Lansbury played the mother of Elvis’ character – even though she was only 10 years older than Elvis! Joan Blackman played the love interest, and later appeared in the 1962 film Kid Galahad.
More than 3,000 fans welcomed Elvis to Honolulu’s International Airport. That evening he gave a live concert in the Bloch Arena at Pearl Harbor to raise funds for the USS Arizona War Memorial. Elvis was an ardent patriot and a generous benefactor of charities. In fact, it’s estimated that he donated over 3.1 million dollars (equal to more than 9 million today) during his lifetime and never claimed his donations as tax deductions.
Blue Hawaii reached #2 on Variety’s list of top-grossing films for 1961. Hundreds of real fans who were watching the shoot can be heard screaming in the first scene when Chad (Elvis) is seen leaving the plane.
The movie’s title album was Billboard’s #1 hit for twenty-straight weeks and sold over 500,000 copies. The single, “Rock-a-Hula Baby,” sold over a million copies alone. Another song, “Aloha Oe” (Farewell to Thee), was written by Hawaii’s last reigning queen, Liliuokalani, in 1878 – after she was forced to abdicate her throne. Her song was a personal farewell to her country.
