King Creole
King Creole features the King of Rock and Roll at the height of his acting career. In fact, it’s considered to be one of his finest works.
Plans for King Creole were well underway when Elvis received his draft notice shortly before Christmas 1957. Elvis’ draft could not have come at a worse time. His recording career was at the highest point yet, and he was set to begin filming his fourth movie, King Creole, on the same day he was supposed to report for the Army.
Immediately, letters began to pour into the draft board from Elvis' management, angry fans, and even Paramount Pictures, who had already invested $350,000 in King Creole. Even the President of the United States received letters that claimed Elvis’ draft was an attempt by the government to sabotage his career. The rush of criticism must have worked, because Elvis was given a 60-day deferment in order to film the movie.
Released on July 2, 1958, King Creole features Elvis’ first film duet – and it’s a sizzler! Black female vocalist Kitty White’s traditional Creole treatment of “Crawfish” blends perfectly with Elvis’ unique rock, rhythm and blues musical style. The soundtrack album spent an amazing 29 weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts.
