Loving You
Elvis left Memphis by train for Hollywood on January 10, 1957, to film Loving You. To prepare for the film, director Hal Kanter had spent a week in Memphis with Elvis and had seen the near-riot fan response to his performances. Kanter drew upon this experience in the film, which paralleled Elvis’ rise to the top.
His parents, Vernon and Gladys, traveled to Hollywood for a month of vacation and to watch their son work. During a visit to the studio, Kanter decided to include them as extras in the movie’s Grand Theater sequence. Loving You is the only film in which Gladys appears, and it’s reported that Elvis was unable to watch the movie after his mother’s death.
Loving You, which featured Elvis’ first on-screen kiss, premiered in Memphis on July 10, 1957. The soundtrack album immediately reached #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed there for a full 10 weeks. The film opened nationally on July 30, 1957, and peaked at #7 on the Variety National Box Office Survey.
