Get a U.S. Half Dollar Enhanced to Honor the 1st Battle of Fallujah

This Mystic-exclusive US half dollar pictures a member of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, at a roadblock outside the city of Fallujah.  In the spring of 2003, US Marines began occupying Fallujah, one of Iraq’s most significant religious and cultural cities.  Over the next year, US troops were frequently attacked by a growing number of insurgents within the town, forcing their complete withdrawal in March 2004.

However, later that month, a group of Iraqi insurgents attacked and killed four American private military contractors. US commanders then resolved to “pacify” the city.  Their attack began on the night of April 4, with some 2,000 troops encircling the city.  Aerial strikes and occasional gun battles continued through the night.  US Marines surrounded the city by the next morning and blockaded the roads.  Air raids and gunships rained fire on the insurgents, while scout snipers proved to be one of the Marines’ greatest assets.  After gaining control of about a quarter of the city within the first three days, the Americans called a ceasefire, to open negotiations and allow supply deliveries to the residents.  Sporadic fighting continued through the month, though both sides agreed to establish a joint US/Iraqi patrol of the city.
