This Mystic-exclusive US half dollar pictures a pair of Marine scout snipers on their way to Baghdad in the spring of 2003. Marine scout snipers typically work in two-man teams. The spotter uses a high-powered spotting scope to find targets for the sniper.
This coin pictures members of the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines (2/23). This reserve unit was activated for a year after the September 11, 2001, attacks as a Quick Reaction Force. Shortly before that year was up, they were called to the Middle East to participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom. As such, they were the first complete infantry reserve battalion deployed for that operation.
In early 2003, they teamed up with the Regimental Combat Team 1 in their drive toward Baghdad. Soon, the line between active duty soldiers and reservists was blurred. No longer relegated to remain on the back lines, Marine reservists were alongside – and sometimes even ahead of – their active duty brethren. It gave the men who trained so hard a sense of pride to be seen as equals for their efforts.
In April, the 2/23 fought their way into Baghdad, facing off against some 200 Iraqis at their intelligence headquarters. After securing the building, they kept the enemy out and within days had the electricity, phones, and water working again. The impressive work of the 2/23 and other reserve units brought about efforts to align them more closely with the active duty soldiers they fought alongside.
