Get a U.S. Half Dollar Enhanced to Honor the 2nd Battle of Fallujah

This Mystic-exclusive US half dollar pictures US soldiers in the process of clearing buildings during the 2nd Battle of Fallujah in the Iraq War.  This battle is often considered the highest point of the fighting in Iraq. It was also the bloodiest battle of the entire war, often compared to the Battle of Hue during the Vietnam conflict.

After months of fighting, US, Iraqi, and British forces – totaling about 13,500 – began preparing to take back Fallujah. They launched weeks of airstrikes and artillery bombardments. Aware of what was next, the militants in Fallujah dug tunnels, trenches, spider holes, and built IEDs (improvised explosive devices). Civilians began fleeing the city in anticipation of the battle to come.

US ground troops launched the operation on the night of November 7, 2004. They captured a hospital and bridge and launched diversionary attacks to distract the insurgents. The next morning coalition forces let loose a massive artillery and air barrage that helped them take control of the main train station that became their staging point for the rest of the battle.

Coalition forces reached the center of the city by the night of November 9, and then launched an assault into the Jolan District – the city’s most dangerous section. By November 16, most of the fighting was over, though the coalition faced pockets of resistance until December 23.
