Final Louisiana Hayride Performance
Elvis first performed on the Louisiana Hayride show in October 1954. At the time, he was an up-and-coming singer. Two years later, he was a star who had appeared on television, had hits on the national charts, and was performing concerts all over the US. In mid-December, 1956, Elvis returned for a final performance in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Large crowds were expected for the concert, so the show was moved to the Youth Center at the state fairgrounds. Elvis had agreed to do the concert for free, with the money going toward the local YMCA. Fans began lining up 13 hours before the performance was scheduled to begin. Presley held a press conference and spoke with members of the local fan club, then he took the stage. His signing was often drowned out by the screams of adoring fans. At the end of the concert, these fans waited for an encore. Instead, they heard the announcement, “Elvis has left the building.”
