Mississippi - Alabama Farm and Dairy Show
On September 26, 1956, Elvis performed two shows at the Mississippi – Alabama Fair and Dairy Show in Tupelo, Mississippi. This was the same fair where Presley had performed for the first time at a talent show when he was just 10 years old. By 1956, Elvis was a rising star, and was filming Love Me Tender when he flew from Hollywood to Mississippi to perform. His fans had gained a reputation for going wild, so the National Guard had been called out to control the crowd. Elvis’s parents were in the audience, as well as a 14-year-old Wynette Pugh, who would later change her name to Tammy Wynette and become a singing legend herself.
Elvis considered the concerts a homecoming, because he had been born in Tupelo. A banner reading “Tupelo Welcomes Elvis Presley Home” was stretched across Main Street. The mayor of the town gave Presley a key to the city.
